What kind of training does TSG offer?
TSG survey courses provide an introduction to the subject content and work environment for each of three specific but related career areas. Twelve weeks in duration survey courses are composed of four-week overviews of each subject. They also address the soft skills and communication challenges that individuals face in getting and keeping employed.
Who is most successful at TSG?
Most successful are mature individuals who have experienced the challenges of post-secondary education, and perhaps even had some experience working. While continuing study beyond high school is a baseline for participation, completing a post secondary degree is not a requirement. However TSG is not a transition program for high school students.
Where is TSG located?
Participants must attend training in person at our office at 1500 Howard Street in San Francisco. The office is close to both MUNI and BART stations. Instruction is Mondays to Thursdays for 5 hours per day.
Are there prerequisite technology studies?
Previous technology experience or study is not required. A general understanding of computers is needed, but it is not necessary that applicants have been successful in technology studies in an academic setting. The application process includes an in person interview to assess basic technological skills and interest.
What do I need to participate?
All necessary equipment is provided except for personal headphones. Assignments may occasionally necessitate work after class hours at home. Off site visits may be scheduled at times and locations outside of the regular class schedule. Therefore participants must be able to independently use SF public transit, and work from home when necessary.
Why should I take all three segments of a survey course?
Participants are strongly encouraged to participate in all three segments of any given survey course. This provides a broad base of knowledge, a competitive advantage in the work world. Few participants are expected to be exemplary in all three segments, but completing a 4-week introduction to the subject matter saves the time, financial and emotional investment versus a full course of studies to reach the same conclusion.
When can I start?
Individuals may apply at any time to be considered for the next segment of a TSG Survey Series. Because of our staggered admission policy, however, an invitation to start training can be a couple of weeks, or may be delayed by 1 to 3 months. Once the assessment process accepts an applicant the two significant factors determining the start date are
1. Space availability, as class size is strictly enforced to a maximum of 8 students, and
2. Confirmation of tuition responsibilities.
Is there any financial assistance for TSG training?
The majority of TSG participants are California Department of Rehabilitation clients. DOR covers the tuition, and commuting costs for students who have received authorisation from their DOR counselors. Individuals who have not received this sponsorship are billed monthly at $45 per instruction day. Unfortunately there are currently no other standardized sources for assistance with tuition, housing or relocation expenses.
What can I do after I complete TSG training?
At the end of the course, the student will have a good understanding of what working is like in each field studied. Such an introduction supports self-assessment of individual personal interests and abilities. Participants receive a written assessment outlining their suitability for working in each area, detailing their strengths and challenges. For those individuals who understand the material, do the work well and could work in open-market employment, the final report will detail the current qualifications generally needed to be considered for employment in each specific field and make recommendations for appropriate sources of training. These recommendations can be used by the student to base future educational decisions, to substantiate subsequent applications with training providers and to validate support for future training by institutional sources of funding. Participants ready for employment receive referrals to local organizations focused on employment for adults with disabilities.
